I was given the opportunity to review Endangered Species Chocolate recently. I was sent 3 chocolate bars – Dark Chocolate with Forest Mint, Milk Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate with Cranberries and Almonds. All 3 were delicious.
I love that Endangered Species Chocolate is all natural. I also love that they have a cause – they donate 10% of net profits to “help support species, habitat, and humanity.” Their cacao is also ethical trade – they “buy their cacao from small family-owner properties, helping sustain the habitats and communities in which they exist.”
Each different flavor of chocolate bar has different information on the inside of the wrapper about the plight of a different species or cause.
The Dark Chocolate with Forest Mint bar is about the rainforest. The info inside reads:
The Rainforest
The Earth's Lungs – Absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere, rainforests have been described as the lings of our planet. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest alone provides more than 20% of the world's oxygen supply. Carbon absorption by rainforests helps reduce the amount of CO2 that could otherwise be released into the Earth's atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
Treasures to be Found – These forests cover only 6% of he earth's surface, yet they are home to over half the plant and animal species in the world! As many as 30 million species live in this lush habitat, including many valuable medicinal plants (25% of pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients). The US National Cancer Institute has identified 3,000 plants that are active against cancer cells. 70% of these plants are found in the rainforest.
The Time for Action is Now – To meet demands for timber and cropland use, an area of the rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed every second. When these forests are cut down, the plants and animals that live in them are destroyed, and many species are at risk if becoming extinct. We are in danger of losing Earth's greatest biological treasure if measures are not taken immediately to protect and restore lush rainforests.
Also on the inside of the wrapper is information about a couple different projects Endangered Species Chocolate participate in. One of these is Project Ecuador. Project Ecuador is the first program of the Endangered Species Chocolate Foundation. The success of this Ecuador-based project is giving cacao farmers access to the SACHA TREE, a hearty cacao tree with prolific yields that bears fruit year 'round. BY as early as 2015 farmers near Sacha, Ecuador, will see cacao yields increase by 733%.
Endangered Species Chocolate honors farmers. At Endangered Species Chocolate, supporting cacao farm families is MISSION CRITICAL. Cacao trees are the source crop for this chocolate bar. In reality, cacao farmers typically live in poverty. Endangered Species Chocolate pays a SOCIAL PREMIUM for cacao to support fair wages and social programs.
You can find out more about Endangered Species Chocolate and all their efforts at ChocolateBar.com and escfoundation.org.
I just have to say that these are some of the best chocolate bars I have ever eaten – so rich and luscious. The Dark Chocolate with Cranberries and Almonds was especially good – yummy little bits of cranberries mixed into the dark chocolate! I shared the Milk Chocolate bar with several friends and although we each only got a little bit, it still felt like a indulgent treat because the chocolate was so good.
